Rich and poor

Want $1 million dollars? Yes? No? Maybe so? I’m one of the folks who does not.

There is a difference between earning your money and having it dropped in your lap. There’s a huge difference. What’s God’s opinion? He wants you to work for it. In fact, He wants you to work for it so badly that He produced clauses in life that hit virtually everyone who has large sums gifted to them.

In my area, we have lots of Indian casinos. We are in Northern California, and just within 20 miles we have five or six poker rooms and five or six full blown casinos. The Indian casinos have an interesting story. When they go up, and are in full operation, everyone in the tribe has a windfall. They receive huge stipends in place of paychecks. Sometimes the yearly salary for an 18 year old can be over a million dollars. No work required. No life lessons required. It just falls in their lap.

Now, you would think this results in good things since poverty is all but erased and lots of dollars get circulated in the local economy. But that’s not how the story goes. They often get into drugs. Virtually none of them go to college. Soon enough, that huge stipend is wiped out in frivolous manner. But the cycle continues. The money shows up, and it gets wasted. Charities don’t receive it. Families don’t progress. Sometimes the recipients die from drugs and reckless living.

God set up the system in a special way. Those who produce their own money generally care about it more. They become wise through their years of producing. Vast sums usually don’t show up until their forties or fifties. By the time they really control a lot of money, they know what to do with it.

My parents gave me a little money when I was 18. I did not exactly blow it all, but I could have done a better job. It was not until I was in my late twenties and early thirties that I truly became careful with my money. Why? Out of necessity. Without knowing what to do with it, I would not have survived and thrived. But the wisdom I built up changed my decision making process. Now my money goes where it should, at least most of the time. We still have some fun, but the important things are taken care of.

Don’t pray for a windfall. Instead ask God for wisdom and drive. The drive to produce enough money to accomplish your goals, and the wisdom to do it in a responsible and intelligent manner.
