The many roles of the Lord

I was in a philosophy class years ago, and the professor kept shoving this mirror in our faces. His point was that true deep thinking starts with introspection. If you want to know about your exterior, your interior can provide some of the best clues. We are all results of this place, so by examining what makes us, us, we can derive answers about God Himself.

I always thought God was a teacher, a schoolyard custodian in a way, pointing us down the right path, giving us the helpful nudge when needed. As I grew, I felt that He was a hero, saving lives and changing things when His people got into trouble. Right now I look at Him as an inspiration, telling me that I can do things that are impossible. Obviously, during the journey, I have acted in those capacities myself, and my view of God did have a reflective aspect.

I guess I feel more like a warrior now. I realize there is a battle, and that a lot hangs in the balance, but I understand that Christ is in command and if I follow the mission than everything will be fine. Last night I spent some time talking to a good friend I had not seen in a while, and she helped me realize that lots of people are intensely connected with God, regardless of their exterior veneer.

So, for those of you who feel like a warrior, or a teacher, or a hero, or whatever, keep in mind that God plays a lot of roles. Putting Him into a box is quite impossible. He shows up in all kinds of ways. If He is currently appearing to you in a negative way, I suggest you look a little harder. The one thing that God will never EVER be is a negative force on your life.
