Over the years I’ve become kind of a pseudo-expert on Christianity. From my online presence, and through friendships here and there, people sometimes ask me to give my opinion on what it means to be a Christian. The answer I always start with is “Christians care for others”.
During a typical day, I would say I probably intercede on behalf of most people out there. I use that ambiguous statement, “most”, because my work does not start and stop. It continues, and it always will continue. When I start helping people through prayer and my connection to Jesus, I gain momentum. I become one of those powerful factors in a person’s life. If you are someone who needs protection, I guide danger away. If you are someone who needs healing, I might stay around you, pushing your body to do things it otherwise could not do. If you just need a shoulder to cry on, I might have a close friend of yours drop by for a surprise visit. I get into all kinds of things really. Lately I find myself blessing the kids at my daughter’s school.
Kids are a different bag of tricks. They make choices and mistakes that adults never do. My role with them is one of instruction, leading them away from danger and helping their parents be kind and nurturing. God has a special place in his heart for the kids. They did not ask to be here. They do not have much control over their situation. In short, they need as much prayer as they can get. So as often as I can manage, I reach out to children who are being abused, or neglected, or ignored. Christ cares for the children, and so do I.
My daughter is such a special girl. She keeps asking me to pray with her. From an early age I would always tell her that in this family we care for the needs of others, because it is our God-given job. God knows how good we are at it. He knows that we love to do it, and so every day is packed with opportunity to reach out to the people who need us. I’ve been telling my daughter that not every child has the kind of life she does, with lots of family and joy. I tell her there are kids in the world who are in serious trouble, and we must always keep them at the front of our prayers. She gets a real determined look on her face, and she says, “Daddy, I will ALWAYS take care of kids who need me.”
Jesus only had one goal. You can argue with me all you want, but there was only one. He wants us to be a family. He wants us to work together. When our brothers and sisters are down on their luck, he wants us to help them. I’ve been passing out ministry cards for awhile now. There is nothing like handing a piece of Jesus to someone who may not know the Savior. I know that lots of needy people will say “God bless you!”. However, they may not really understand the level at which I’m working. As soon as I pass off that card, an eternal relationship is formed. I’ll be caring for and watching over them for eternity. That’s my job, that’s the mission Christ gave me, and I absolutely love to do it!
The world was not intended to be such a tooth and nail competition. We are not supposed to be fighting over land, and money, and justice. Instead we are meant to discuss our problems, work out solutions, and go on with our lives. Murder, and rape, and kidnapping are not even remote elements of this world. They are invasions and diseases. What does that mean? Well, it means guys like me will always have a job. But it also means that one day everything will be cleaned up and restored to its rightful state. The decision you must make is how much effort you want to put into your role in all of this. Do you want to shower those around you with blessings and love? Or will you sit on the sidelines and let others do it?
I’m only 34, but I have done enough sitting for one lifetime. If you ever need to find me, all you have to do is ask Jesus for help. Myself, or another brother or sister, will come by soon enough.
