What made childhood fun? Lots of things. Or maybe you had an incredibly sad childhood. Maybe a catastrophic one. But you know what most kids enjoyed? Lunchtime.
I started life in New Orleans, Louisiana, in a very nice school. I was blessed. My parents were wonderful Christian people who worked very hard to take care of me and my younger brother. I generally enjoyed school. I worked hard, got good grades, and did not really misbehave. However, there was a key component to my life, something that made it extra-special.
I had a tremendously awesome best friend, and a great group of other friends.
As an adult, where are those folks? Well, my friends are scattered all over the country. They are all generally successful. They became family people, on average. There are doctors and lawyers thrown in there, and even an NFL player. I never get to see them, though. At the most, there is a message thrown through email or social media every now and then. So I’ve had to develop another tool for enjoying my days: lunch.
I have friends in my local area, a social circle I’ve developed over years of working in Sacramento. I set up lunches, nearly every other day. I only see people I generally want to see. I don’t waste time trying to have power lunches, or “agenda” lunches as I call them. I spend time with people I enjoy being around. Usually the lunches are not expensive. But what I notice the most is that they have added a tremendous amount of social value to my life. I go through my week in a much better mood, enjoying the blessings that my friends add. What is the point of life, after all? Its fellowship. You can talk about salvation, but what fun would salvation be if you could not bring along your close friends?
God is here to do wonderful things with your life. The first and foremost thing that He does is provide you with people to help your life. He sends waves of angels, over and over again. They show up in all kinds of forms. Mostly, they will be friends that you see every now and then, or coworkers. What makes fellowship during lunchtime so important is that it is a KEY BREAK in the day. You stop what you are doing, and you say to the world, “I am going to enjoy my time with my wonderful friend(s). This is why God made my day. Production and efficiency are great, but God wants me to love my friends and be around them. So that is what I will do.”
Life can be absolutely awesome! It is packed with all kinds of opportunity. Christ HIMSELF is an opportunity, and so is friendship during lunchtime. I suggest you combine all of that together, and make sure to schedule lunches with friends as often as you can. It makes the day so much more enjoyable and miraculous!
Breaking bread often with good friends is a Jesus thing. Start making it a you thing.
