Do you feel imprisoned? The easiest way to ditch that feeling is by working toward goals that you really, really care about.
What most people don't understand about goal chasing is that they have factors that must be treated a certain way, or failure is imminent. The goal must be healthy, in all senses of the word. The goal must be genuine, meaning that external agendas are not the reason you're chasing it. Also, the goal must be separate from other experiences, meaning that you work toward it because of the nature of it, not to secure some second-hand reward, like cash, power, or fame. In other words, the goal is pure.
I have been working toward lots of stuff for many years , but almost none of it falls into those categories. I have attached so many agendas, so many rewards, to all of my dreams, that I can barely tell what the dreams are anymore! I'm guessing that if you are past the age of 30, you are feeling the same way. What's the solution? Jesus, of course!
You have to start practicing the kind of altruism that Jesus did. He worked completely outside of Himself. Everything He did was for us. There were no agendas, no rewards. He went through lots of work and pain purely to do for humanity what needed to be done. That is the kind of model that you need to structure into your own dreams.
Dreams are extremely important! Once you let go of them, sometimes they are gone forever. I'm sure you've noticed that you feel differently when you are working toward your dreams. The work is not so much work, but a natural effort that you don't have much problem exerting. That is what separates happy people from the folks that are just grinding away their existence.
